The Best Way To Determine Which Flashing Kit You Need

Which Flashing Kit Do You Need?

The Best Way To Determine Which Flashing Kit You Need

A very common question we get asked as roof window suppliers is ‘which flashing kit do I need?’. With various brands and flashing types, it is not out of the ordinary to question which kit fits your tile or slates and here is where we discuss the various flashing kits and what they are suitable for.

In order to properly identify which flashing kit you need, you will first need to find out the profile thickness of your tile or slate. This is hugely important as every roof window flashing has been designed to suit various profile thicknesses as opposed to a flashing for each tile or slate that has ever been made.

The best way to measure the profile thickness of your tile and slates is to measure from the lowest point to the highest point. You will find an image below that gives a visual representation as to how profile thicknesses are obtained:

Roof window flashings

Tiles

0-14mm Profile Thickness

Most roof tiles within this category tend to be flat, which makes the measuring of your profile thickness a little easier as you can simply measure the thickness of the tile.

If your roof tile falls within this category, your best option would be either a RoofLITE+ KFP Plain Tile Flashing or a VELUX Plain Tile Flashing, which is available for both RoofLITE+ and VELUX roof windows respectively.

16-50mm Profile Thickness

With this type of profile thickness, you will often find varying designs of tiled roofs. Some will be flat and others will be wavy, which means you will either measure the thickness of a flat tile or the highest point to the lowest point of a wavy tile.

If your roof tile falls within this category, your best option would be a standard tile flashing. The only standard tile flashing available is for the RoofLITE+ roof windows.

16-120mm Profile Thickness

The flashing kit for these profile thicknesses is commonly used for tiles that have profile thicknesses between 50-120mm, but can also be used for tiles between 16-50mm as well. Most tiles within this range tend to have a wavy design, so you will need to measure the highest point to the lowest point.

If you have a roof tile within the 16-50mm range, you would need to use a RoofLITE+ TFX Flashing or VELUX Deep Tile Flashing for RoofLITE+ and VELUX roof windows respectively, or if you have a roof tile within the 50-120mm range, you would need to use the RoofLITE+ UFX Universal Flashing or the VELUX Deep Tile Flashing.

Slates

0-8mm Profile Thickness

Most slates are within this range of profile thickness and are usually flat, so just the thickness of the slate is enough to determine which flashing kit you need.

If you have a slate within this range, you would need either a RoofLITE+ LSX Slate Flashing or a VELUX Slate Flashing.

Recessed Flashings

If you aren’t a fan of your roof window protruding from the roofline, you can reduce the protrusion with the use of recessed flashings.

We have a VELUX Recessed Slate Flashing and a VELUX Recessed Tile Flashing available which allows you to create a recessed installation, offering a more flush finish.

It is worth noting that the recessed finish ultimately depends on the thickness of your roofing material. If you have a thin roofing material, there is still a strong possibility that your roof window will protrude from the roofline.

If you have a thicker roofing material, your roof window protruding from the roofline is less likely to happen.

If you have a tile or slate that doesn’t fall within these parameters or a roof that doesn’t comprise either of these materials, please contact our sales office as we may need to ask further questions to determine which flashing kit is best suited for you.
